The TerraZoo Rheinberg is a privately owned reptile in Rheinberg on the Lower Rhine .
The TerraZoo Rheinberg was originally built in 1996 in the basement of the shaft IV in Moers . However, due to the unsuitable zoological conditions in the damp basement with proximity to the disco and fitness studio, after five years the company moved to a new building in the Rheinberg district of Winterswick . The exhibition was expanded to include Nile crocodiles from Duisburg Zoo and an outdoor area with reptiles from temperate latitudes.
The TerraZoo Rheinberg presents around 100 species with 400 cold-blooded animals, including Nile crocodiles and tortoises as well as scaled reptiles in particular . Some amphibians and invertebrates such as tarantulas complete the exhibition. The terrariums, which are accessible from at least three sides, receive a lot of daylight. Visitors can watch the keepers go about their daily tasks and learn more about the biology of the animals. Natural furnishings, real plants and natural substrates are used in all terrariums. The TerraZoo school and daily tours on the topic of "native reptiles" round off the zoo's educational program. Smaller research projects are carried out by the zoo. Research and conservation of protected species animals in captivity, such as the common viper ( Vipera berus ), are in the foreground.
The RAS Zoo non-profit GmbH took over the TerraZoo Rheinberg on January 1st, 2011 from the foreclosure auction. To cover the costs of the non-profit institutions, the reptile sanctuary in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, which are connected to the TerraZoo Rheinberg and the TerraZoo Sontra , were added.
