Imperium is a Terra-X documentary series about empires and their rise, successes, achievements and fall. Maximilian Schell was the narrator of the ZDF series, which was first broadcast in 2004 .

While the series was initially only broadcast every two years with four episodes each, three new episodes were broadcast annually from 2008 to 2011. The basilica in Eberbach Monastery in Eltville am Rhein near Wiesbaden was used as the filming location for the sequences with Maximilian Schell as the narrator . The most important element of the series are the productions, the so-called reenactments , in which the historical moments are re-enacted.

In 2008 the special season Imperium of the Popes was produced, which was entirely dedicated to the papacy. Ifage Filmproduktion GmbH is involved in the production of Imperium. Günther Klein was responsible for the overall creative direction of all episodes in the series . Individual episodes were released on DVD.
