The terrorist attacks on November 12, 2015 in Beirut killed 44 people and injured more than 200 people. It was the worst terrorist attack in Beirut since the end of the Lebanese civil war . The Islamic State took responsibility for the attacks.

Two suicide bombers blew themselves up during the evening rush hour in the predominantly Shiite suburb of Beirut Burj al-Barajna . One assassin detonated his explosive device in front of a Shiite mosque , the second in a bakery 50 meters away . Lebanese Army soldiers and Hezbollah fighters sealed off the scene.

About 48 hours after the attack, Lebanese security forces arrested 11 people, most of them Syrians, in connection with the attacks. The arrest of two other suspects from Syria and Lebanon was later announced. They were held in a Palestinian refugee camp in Burj al-Barajna and in an apartment in the Ashrafiyya district where the explosive belts were allegedly prepared.

The terrorist organization Islamic State said on social networks that it was behind the attack. The attack was carried out with a prepared motorcycle and by a fighter with an explosives belt. There was no mention of a third assassin. The notification could not be independently verified.

Background and reactions

The quarter is considered the stronghold of Hezbollah. Their fighters are on the side of President Bashar al-Assad's regime and against ISIS in the Syrian civil war .

Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam proclaimed a day of national mourning for Friday, November 13th.

Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier described the terrorist attack as a "direct and deliberate attack on the stability of Lebanon". The attackers' intention to stir up a climate of hatred and discord between denominations in Lebanon should not work.

In addition to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon , the White House also condemned the attacks and went on to say that it was helping the government to bring those responsible to justice.
