Terry O'Flaherty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Terry O'Flaherty is an Irish politician, former member of the Progressive Democrats and a member of Galway City Council since 1999 .

Terry O'Flaherty was elected to the Galway City Council in 1999, taking over the seat of her mother Bridie O'Flaherty , who had been on the Galway City Council for 25 years. During her first term, Terry O'Flaherty was Mayor of Galway from June 2003 to June 2004. Her mother held this office twice before her from 1980 to 1981 and from 1985 to 1986. The two have thus been the first mother-daughter couple in the office of mayor.

In 2004 and 2009 Terry O'Flaherty was re-elected to the city council. In the latter election, she had run as an Independent, since she had left the Progressive Democrats in October 2008. In June 2012 she became mayor of Galway again. She is a descendant of the O'Flaherty clan who ruled Connemara until the 17th century.
