from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bridie O'Flaherty (1917 or 1918 - January 12, 2006 in Mervue , Galway ) was an Irish politician and two-time mayor of Galway.

Bridie O'Flaherty began her political career as a member of the Fianna Fáil . From July 1980 to June 1981, she held the office of Mayor of Galway for her party; from July 1985 to June 1986 she held the office again. During her second term, however, O'Flaherty joined the newly formed Progressive Democrats . In 1999 Bridie O'Flaherty was replaced by her daughter Terry O'Flaherty in the Galway City Council ( Galway City Council ). By then, Bridie O'Flaherty had served on the city council for 25 years.

From June 2003 to June 2004, her daughter also became mayor of Galway. This made them the first mother-daughter couple in the office of mayor. Both are descendants of the O'Flaherty clan who ruled Connemara until the 17th century.
