Tescelin de Fontaine , Tescelin le Roux , "the redhead", Tescelin Sorrel , also Tesselin , Tecelinus , also Sorus , Le Saur († around 1130) was a Burgundian nobleman and Cistercian and the father of St. Bernhard of Clairvaux .

Life

Tescelin came from the family of the lords of Châtillon-sur-Seine and was castellan of the castle of Fontaine-lès-Dijon as a follower of the Duke of Burgundy . He administered domains in the Montbard area and, at a very young age, married Aleth de Montbard of the noble family of Montbard . They had seven children, six sons and a daughter; Bernhard was the third oldest. When Bernhard founded the Clairvaux Cistercian monastery in 1115, according to tradition, his father and all his brothers were part of the founding convent.

Adoration

Unlike his wife and children Bernhard, Gerhard and Ombeline , Tescelin was never beatified or canonized, but is often depicted with a halo in church art . His name ( Tecelin, Tezelin ) occurs occasionally as a baptismal name and as a Cistercian religious name .
