Teso Turkana languages

Teso-Turkana is a subgroup of the East Nilotic languages within the Nilo-Saharan language family .

It consists of the following five languages ​​- the code according to ISO 639-3 is given in square brackets :

• Teso [teo] (approx. 1.3 million speakers in Uganda and Kenya )
• Turkana Group:
  • Karamojong [kdj] (approx. 370,000 in Uganda)
  • Nyangatom [nnj] (approx. 14,000 in Ethiopia )
  • Toposa [toq] (approx. 100,000 in Sudan )
  • Turkana [tuv] (approx. 365,000 in Sudan and Ethiopia)

Linguistic characteristics

The Teso Turkana languages ​​are tonal languages and all have the basic word order verb-subject-object .
