Test of English for International Communication

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Test Of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is an internationally recognized language test of the Educational Testing Service . The result of the test serves as a measure of the ability of people who do not speak English as their mother tongue to use it in everyday communication in their professional environment. In contrast to the TOEIC, the TOEFL is intended more for the academic sector, for language skills for university admissions, and is often used for this in North America. The TOEIC includes questions to determine listening and reading comprehension, and since 2007 there has also been a test part for written expression and an oral part. The test result is the number of points achieved (max. 990 points), which is used as proof of the language level.

There is also a conversion table that can be used to compare the number of points achieved in the various tests ( IELTS , ToEFL etc.). Many American universities require a minimum TOEIC score of 765 points as a study requirement.

It is estimated that around five million people take the TOEIC test annually worldwide. In Asia in particular (Japan, South Korea) it is more popular than the TOEFL or Cambridge Certificates .

Certificates

  •       Orange: 10-215
  •       Brown: 220 - 465
  •       Green: 470-725
  •       Blue: 730-855
  •       Gold: 860-990

The TOEIC test results are determined by the number of correct answers in each section, which is then converted into a score. Test-takers are awarded separate points for the listening and reading sections on a scale of 5 to 495 points. The total number of points is therefore between 10 and 990 points. Statistical procedures ensure that similar TOEIC results actually show a similar level of English proficiency.

Like all results from tests by ETS, the TOEIC certificate is valid as long as the corresponding language skills of the test candidates remain the same. However, this knowledge can improve or deteriorate over time. For this reason, the following applies: the more up-to-date the result, the more likely it is that the result will match the ability of the test candidate. Thus, it is recommended that the test results be considered valid for up to two years. However, companies and academic institutions are free to recognize results beyond this.
