Language test

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Language tests are used in different areas. In general, language tests are about determining a person's active and passive language proficiency . The implementation and evaluation of the results vary depending on the area of application.

Application area medicine

In medicine , a language test is carried out on toddlers in order to diagnose any developmental disorders that may be present. A so-called combined visual acuity and language test table is often used for this purpose . It combines the diagnosis of visual defects and speech disorders and consists of images of everyday objects of different sizes. The toddler must now name the term whose picture can be seen on the board. In this way, visual defects (e.g. due to incorrect recognition of the image) and speech defects (due to incorrect pronunciation of the term) can be diagnosed.

Application area immigration

According to the current German immigration law, foreign asylum seekers must prove sufficient knowledge of German in a language test. A lack of German language skills usually leads to instructions on how to participate in language courses that are compulsory in order to be granted asylum. To apply for German citizenship by immigrants, language skills must also be proven using the German certificate . To do this, a language test must be taken, the level of difficulty of which corresponds to level 2 of the five-level ALTE scale . This is equivalent to level B1 according to the GER scheme .

It makes it difficult for many test participants to pass the test if they had no or irregular school attendance in their youth. It is not possible for illiterate people to pass the test. Many Turkish parents make it difficult for their daughters to attend school or forbid them to go to school - also because they need their labor in the house or in the fields. If a Turkish woman marries in Germany, she must be an adult and have 'little language skills'.

Rhineland-Palatinate is (as of October 2013) the first federal state to require a language test for immigrant doctors before issuing a work permit.
