history

Joseph Tetley & Co. was founded in Yorkshire in 1837 by brothers Joseph and Edward Tetley. In 1856 they moved the company headquarters to London, where they ran a tea wholesale business with their new partner Joseph Ackland under the name Joseph Tetley & Company. The company grew and was later taken over by the British food manufacturer J. Lyons & Co. , who also ran a chain of tea shops, and renamed Lyons Tetley. In 1888 the company expanded into the USA. In 1953 Tetley was the first manufacturer in Great Britain to offer tea packaged in silk infusion bags , the invention of the American Thomas Sullivan was known there. At the end of the 1970s, J. Lyons merged with Allied Breweries to form Allied Lyons; after further mergers, Tetley became part of the resulting Allied Domecq group . When this focused on the liquor business, Tetley was sold to management in 1995. In 2000, Tetley was resold for £ 271 million and became a wholly owned subsidiary of the Indian group of companies, Tata Global Beverages (formerly Tata Tea). This belongs to the conglomerate of the Tata Group and is the second largest producer and marketer of packaged tea in the world after Unilever (brands Lipton , PG Tips and others).
