Tetragondacnus spilotus is a rare and little-known marine fish belonging to the intestinal fish family(Carapidae). The species has been described using a single specimen that was caught in2005 at a depth of about 500 meters off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. Another wascaughtoff the coast of Japan near Muroto in 2009.
features
Tetragondacnus spilotus differs from all other visceral fish in its scaling, all others are scaly, due to the position of the dorsal fin attachment in front of the anal fin and the enlargement of the first spinous process to a wing-like outgrowth that is larger than the second spinous process. Supraneuralia (parts of the vertebrae) are missing. The parapophysis (process on the underside of vertebrae) of the third vertebra is enlarged. There are a total of 13 abdominal vertebrae . The mouth is angular, the upper jaw edentulous. Functional gill rakes are not available. The swim bladder is simple and large. There is no ossification of the front part of the swim bladder, as occurs in many other intestinal fish-like species. The caudal fin has eleven fin rays . Tetragondacnus spilotus shows large dark spots on its body sides .
Because of the numerous characteristics that distinguish the species from other gut fish, it is placed in its own subfamily, the Tetragondacninae.
