Teufelsküche (Gütighofen)

Devil's Kitchen, top left the main cave

The Teufelsküche consists of several small caves in a limestone formation in Central Jurassic (main roe stone) on the Mount of Olives above Gütighofen near Ehrenkirchen . The caves are partly made naturally by karstification and partly by human hands. The main cave is about ten meters high on a steep wall, about 40 m above the current level of the Möhlin . Right next to it you can also find the remains of the wall of Hauenfels Castle , which was inhabited between 1200 and 1600.

Reindeer hunters lived in the protective caves in the Paleolithic around 35,000 years ago , which can be archaeologically proven by finds of bones and tools made of flint .

The caves are open to the public at any time, the main cave can only be reached by ladder.

The rocks on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives with its caves have been designated as geotopes in the Freiburg administrative region.
