Ratu Tatu Tevita Momoedonu (born February 4, 1941 in Vanua Balavu ) is a Fijian politician who was Prime Minister of Fiji twice for a very short time.

Political career

1999 Momoedonu was for the Fiji Labor Party in the House of Representatives Fiji's elected. He was immediately appointed to the cabinet as well. When George Speight stormed parliament in a coup on May 19, 2000 , Momoedonu was the only minister absent. Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry and all the other ministers were taken hostage. President Kamisese Mara then wanted to take full power to stop the coup, but this was not constitutional. For this he would have needed the order of the Prime Minister, who could not give it due to his being held hostage. Mara then dismissed Prime Minister Chaudhry on May 27 and appointed Momoedonu Prime Minister so that he could transfer power to him. This move was legally controversial, but Momoedonu transferred office to the President and then resigned after only a few minutes in office .

He was then Minister for Labor and Industry in the cabinet of his successor Laisenia Qarase until September 2001. On March 14, 2001, he was reappointed Prime Minister, this time by President Josefa Iloilo . The Fijian Court of Appeal had stated that the assumption of the presidency of Iloilo and Prime Minister Qarase after the coup in 2000 was constitutionally incorrect and therefore ineffective. At the same time, the court demanded the reinstatement of the old government. Kamisese Mara announced his resignation retrospectively, which made Iloilo lawful president, and was finally confirmed by the council of chiefs. However, Iloilo refused to reappoint Chaudhry as prime minister because his Labor Party did not have a majority in parliament. He wanted to initiate an election, but could only do so at the request of a Prime Minister. He then named Momoedonu Prime Minister for the second time, who submitted this call for election until March 16 and then resigned. To this day, he is considered one of the heads of government with the shortest terms in office, even twice.

In the parliamentary election that followed, Momoedonu was a candidate for the Bei Kai Viti party (German: Protector of Fiji), but with 2.2% it did not get a seat in parliament.

ambassador

In 2002, Momoedonu was appointed Fiji's Special Envoy and Plenipotentiary to Japan . In March 2006 , he returned to Fiji after his term was up.
