Texas Showdown (original name Strife ) is a card game by the American game designer Mark Major , which was published in 2015 by The Game Crafter, LLC and in German by Amigo in 2018 . The trick game is about getting as few tricks as possible and thus getting minus points.

Background and material

The basic gameplay of Texas Showdown corresponds to that of other trick-taking games, but tricks won in this game count as minus points. The aim of the game is therefore to get as few tricks as possible.

The game material is language-neutral and consists of 60 playing cards with values from 1 to 74 in eight different colors. The cards show the game colors as colts (black, 0–10), boots (red, 11–20), hats (blue, 21–29), horseshoes (brown, 31–38), cacti (green, 41–47 ), Stars (yellow, 51–56), wheels (violet, 61–65) and skulls (gray, 71–74), and the number of cards in the respective game color and the value within the color are indicated on each card .

Game flow

Actions per game round
  • Play cards
  • Settle the stitch
  • Winner gets the trick

In a three-player game, the black Colt and gray skull cards are sorted out before the game. At the beginning of the game the cards are shuffled and evenly distributed to the other players.

Starting with the player who has the "0" (if there are three players, the "11") in his hand and has to play this as the opening, all players play one card in the middle of the table in a clockwise direction. If possible, each player must also play a card of an already played suit (obligation to operate) or, if he does not have a corresponding card in hand, add a card of any color (discard).

The player who played the highest card of the suit that has most of the cards in the trick wins the trick. If the same number of cards of several colors are in the trick, the player with the highest card of these colors wins. The player who takes the trick places it in front of him. If a player receives more tricks, he places them next to them. The winner of the trick opens the next trick; However, if he has won the trick with the highest card of a suit (large color motif in the middle of the card), he may choose a player who must open.

The round ends when all cards have been discarded. Each player receives a minus point for each trick won and notes this number of points. A game continues until one player has scored 15 points with three or four players, 12 with five players and 10 points with six players. That player loses the game, the one with the fewest points wins.
