Thala Island is the southernmost of two small and rocky islands (the other is Nella Island ) off the Pennell coast of Victoria Land . It is located just before the northwestern edge of the Davis-Piedmont Glacier .

Participants of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions named it after the MV Thala Dan , one of two research vessels exploring this coastline in 1962.
