details

In 1855, the London Royal Thames Yacht Club replaced Builders Old Measurement with Thames Measurement in order to obtain a fairer calculation formula for the handicap of the yachts measured in this way. The Builders Old Measurement previously used in boat measurements had been exhausted by some yacht owners by shortening the keel length as much as possible . Nevertheless, the new calculation formula was also based on the Builders Old Measurement. However, the calculation of the length of the ship in the new calculation formula was based on the length of the hull in order to prevent misuse in this regard.

The measurement formula was widespread in Great Britain and lasted, for example, from the first edition of Lloyd's Register of Yachts in 1878 to the last in 1980. Even today, the formula is still used sporadically to calculate the cost of building a traditional new yacht Type.
