The Royal Thames Yacht Club (RTYC) is one of the UK's oldest sailing clubs . The clubhouse is located in Knightsbridge, London , with an uninterrupted view of Hyde Park .
The RTYC was founded in 1775. Prince Henry, Duke of Cumberland and Strathearn , younger brother of King George III. , donated a silver cup for a sailing regatta on the Thames on the occasion of its establishment . The club's alternative name, the Cumberland Fleet, dates from this period . The club has had its current name since 1830. In 1855 the club introduced a new measurement formula for yachts, the Thames Measurement . The formula quickly became the standard for British yacht clubs. Before 1857 the members met in changing coffee houses in London before a clubhouse was acquired. The current clubhouse at 60 Knightsbridge has been owned by RTYC since 1923.
In 2007 the RTYC decided to work with Team Origin , the British syndicate at the 33rd America's Cup .
