history

The song was originally recorded on September 6, 1946 in Chicago by Crudup and released as a single on RCA Victor . In the same session he recorded a musically almost identical piece, which was also released as a single with a different text under the title I Don't Know It . In March 1949, the song was re-released under the title That's All Right, Mama (RCA Victor 50-0000). This single is listed on RCA as the first rhythm and blues record in the then new 45-rpm format and was held in bright orange.

Elvis Presley's version was released on July 19, 1954 on Sun Records as number 209 with Blue Moon of Kentucky as the b-side. The record sold about 20,000 times and initially reached neither international nor national charts, but was able to occupy number 4 on the local charts in Memphis (Tennessee) . Arthur Crudup was named as the author of the piece on the Presley single label, but it wasn't until the 1960s that he received $ 60,000 in royalties. It was not until 2004 that the title reached the international charts, namely No. 3 in Great Britain, No. 31 in Australia and No. 47 in Sweden.

In 1955 a country version of Marty Robbins was released , which reached number 7 on the Billboard country singles chart . The "Mexican Elvis" El Vez published a Spanish-language version in 1994 with the title Esta Bien Mamacita .
