Thatcher Baronet , of Scotney in the County of Kent , is a hereditary British title ( Baronetcy ) in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom .

Award and history of the title

The title was created on December 7, 1990 by Queen Elizabeth II on the recommendation of Prime Minister John Major for Denis Thatcher , nine days after the resignation of his wife Margaret Thatcher as British Prime Minister. Major told the Commons Public Administration Committee in May 2004 that he had been asked by an "influential figure" in the Conservative Party to make this recommendation against his personal preferences. The former Prime Minister Thatcher received the Order of Merit at the same time and was promoted to life peer after leaving the House of Commons in 1992 .

The current title holder is Mark Thatcher , who succeeded his father in 2003 as 2nd Baronet. Following his conviction for involvement in a 2004 coup attempt, there were demands for his title to be revoked.

The title is the only baronetcy and one of only three hereditary nobility titles that have been granted outside of the British Royal Family since 1965 . The other two titles, Earl of Stockton and Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden , were bestowed on Conservative Prime Minister Harold Macmillan in 1984.
