The Buckinghams

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Buckinghams was an American rock group from the 1960s.

Act

The band was founded in Chicago / Illinois . In 1966 they got their first record deal with the small record company "USA Records", and their first single Kind Of A Drag became a number 1 hit in the USA .

Then the band switched to Columbia Records , a major label and got James William Guercio as songwriter and producer . In the course of a year from March 1967 to February 1968, the Buckinghams had four more Top 20 hits: Don't You Care reached number 6, Mercy, Mercy, Mercy number 5, Hey Baby (They're Playing Our Song) number 12 and Susan reached number 11 in early 1968. Although Guercio had some experience and contacts as a member of Frank Zappa's band The Mothers (a forerunner of The Mothers of Invention, which later became known ), further success failed to materialize. Only her single Back In Love Again was able to reach number 57 in the pop charts in 1968.

The five albums released by the Buckinghams from 1967 to 1969 could all place themselves in the album charts, even if only in the lower regions. In 1967 Kind Of A Drag and Time And Changes reached chart positions, in 1968 Portraits and In One Ear And Gone Tomorrow , and in 1969 the sampler The Buckinghams' Greatest Hits .

The group disappeared into oblivion, later attempts at comeback were unsuccessful. In 1973 Dennis Tufano and Carl Giamarese recorded records as a duo. Martin Grebb founded the band The Fabulous Rhinestones .
