The Cat Lady is an adventure game from the Polish studio Harvester Games from 2012. It is part of the horror genre because of the numerous explicit depictions of violence, but its content deals with complex, psychological developments.

action

The player takes on the role of Susan Ashworth, a middle-aged single woman who can no longer cope with her life. She lives single after losing her job, and her only point of reference to the outside world is the neighborhood cats that come and go. At the beginning of the game, she just attempted suicide . In several chapters, it is important to alternately explore Ashworth's subconscious and her real environment and to give her a perspective for further life despite several setbacks.

Game principle and technology

The Cat Lady is held in 2D and is completely controlled via the keyboard. The player moves Susan to the left and right with the cursor keys , is pointed out to manipulable objects when passing through them and can then trigger actions with several special keys. The interaction options are therefore slightly restricted compared to classic point-and-click adventures , but The Cat Lady focuses on a multi-layered plot and the development of the game character, which is sometimes more important for adventure players than sophisticated controls.

Production notes

Author Michalski, who was born in Poland and lives in England and works full time as a nurse, said he was encouraged to play a game about depression through observations and conversations with friends, relatives and patients. A person from his circle of acquaintances served as a model for the main character Susan Ashworth. The soundtrack contains songs from the alternative bands Tears of Mars and Warmer . The speakers include a. David Firth .

Metacritic aggregated eleven reviews of the game to give an average rating of 81/100. The work of a small independent studio, The Cat Lady has been ignored by many major game magazines. Small online magazines with a focus on adventure games were impressed by the complex story and the rather unusual setting as well as the background music. The inadequate graphic design and occasionally the high proportion of depictions of violence were criticized.
