The Cat and the Canary is a song by Jay Livingston (music) and Ray Evans (lyrics) released in 1944.

Livingston and Evans wrote The Cat and the Canary in 1944 for Johnny Mercer and his radio show Chesterfield Music Shop . In the song the cat stood for a jazz musician and the canary for a band singer. The song was used in the crime drama Why Girls Leave Home (1945, director: William Berke ), with Lola Lane , Sheldon Leonard and Pamela Blake in the leading roles. The Johnny Mercer song received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1946 .
