The Essence are a dark wave / gothic rock band from the Netherlands . The group around the singer Hans Diener (guitar, vocals) - consisting of Mark (keyboards), Jos (bass) and George (drums) - is often regarded as a close musical relative of The Cure , whose songs they also like to play at their concerts covers. The band celebrated their greatest successes in the late 1980s.

Band history

The band was founded in 1984 as a classic school band. After a year of intensive touring, a contract was signed with the label Midnight Music, which made the release of the first album "Purity" possible, which was particularly successful in Germany and the Netherlands with the single "The Cat". In 1987 the second album "A Monument Of Trust" followed, its release "A Mirage" even made it into the Spanish Top 10. The Essence toured across Europe and could not only in the Netherlands, but also in France, Germany, Spain, Great Britain and Switzerland build a loyal fan base. The third album "Ecstasy" was released in 1990, followed by the concept album "Nothing Lasts Forever" the following year. With the latter, the band even managed to gain a foothold in Japan and the USA. This ended the first section of the band's history, the best-of “Dancing In The Rain” and a compilation consisting of the last two albums were released.

In 1996 the last studio album "Glow" was released on a new label. This CD is no longer available and therefore has a high collector's value among fans. While there was still a lot of touring for this album, it has become relatively quiet around the band. Performances take place almost exclusively in Germany and the Netherlands and are rare. A new album was planned for 2006, but has not yet been released. However, the band is always in the studio and working on it.
