The European Society for History of Law

The European Society for History of Law is a European association based in Brno (Czech Republic) that was founded in 2009.

The purpose of the association is to support research in the fields of legal history , Roman law (known as Romance studies ) and legal thought in various European countries. The subject of interest are:

  • the legal systems and legal institutions,
  • the legal structures,
  • the important personalities of legal history, jurisprudence and legal thought,
  • Roman law
  • the history of legal thought.

The association not only includes people from the academic field, but it also works with personalities from the judiciary (especially constitutional judges), from the public prosecutor's office, the legal profession or the public administration who play a decisive role in fulfilling the goals of society contribute.

The society organizes conferences, lectures, seminars, excursions and meetings at which current issues in European legal history are discussed. The society serves as a platform for the presentation of the academic results of legal historians from European countries. The publication of the English and German journal Journal on European History of Law ( ISSN  2042-6402 ) also contributes to the latter . With the help of these two languages, this journal conveys knowledge from legal history and Romance studies to interested parties from all over the world.
