Superintendent Stella Gibson (Gillian Anderson), a chief commissioner for the Met , has been seconded to Belfast to oversee a review of the investigation into Alice Monroe's death. She has himself introduced to Sergeant James Olson (Ben Peel) after seeing him at the scene of another murder. She gives him her hotel room number. The apparently respectable family man Paul Spector (Jamie Dornan) persecutes attorney Sarah Kay (Laura Donnelly) and is determined to make her his victim.

Gibson is called to the scene of Sarah Kay's murder, a crime for which PC Danielle Ferrington (Niamh McGrady) is guilty. Ferrington admits to Gibson that she and her partner left the building after unsuccessfully trying to reach Sarah Kay the night after the break-in, unaware that they left Kay alone with her attacker. Burns agrees to make Gibson the chief investigator (SIO) of the investigation after convincing him to admit that the murders are linked. Prof. Reed Smith (Archie Panjabi) arrives at the scene and joins the investigation team. DS Olson appears at the scene of Sarah Kay's murder and asks Gibson why she ignored his messages. Gibson dismisses him unimpressed by his crime scene violation and his earlier sending of her picture emails. Morgan Monroe (Ian McElhinney) forces Burns to clear his son's name in connection with the murders while DS James Olson is murdered outside his home. Meanwhile, Spector hides the evidence of his latest crime in the cache on the ceiling of his daughter's bedroom while Katie Benedetto (Aisling Franciosi), the 15-year-old babysitter, shows her interest in him.

Meanwhile, Paul's wife Sally Ann (Bronagh Waugh), unaware of her husband's secret, worries about her daughter, who is having nightmares. These threaten to reveal the killer's secret cache. Spector first noticed Gibson when he saw her on television at a press conference about the investigation.

The latter force them to take drastic measures that drag Stella deeper into the internal affairs investigation. An old friend of Prof. Reed Smith's, Rose Stagg, tells Gibson that a man named Peter made her nearly unconscious while studying at university almost nine years ago. Spector's professional relationship with Liz Tyler (Séainín Brennan) is challenged by both his superiors and her husband Jimmy (Brian Milligan), forcing him to hasten his next attack - with dire consequences. By now, his daughter could prove his downfall as her nightmares become more common and she begins to draw disturbing pictures.

Gibson begins investigating the unsuccessful attack on Annie Brawley (Karen Hassan) and brings her one step closer to the killer, both emotionally and physically. The investigation begins to focus on a single person. Gibson and Sarah Kay's father requested a televised plea for information about the murders. Gibson announces that the killer will have the opportunity to speak to her privately if he gets in touch. In surveillance camera footage of Sarah Kay walking through the gates of the city garden, Spector cannot be seen far behind, so that he is forced to make a statement to the police. Pregnant Sally Ann supports false police claims that he was home on the night of the attack on Brawley. Sally Ann confronts Spector that she lied to the police about why he lies to his wife, who wants to know what he was actually doing late at night. He tells her that he had a three month affair with their children's young babysitter, Katie. The lie threatens to tear his family apart and reveal his secret. Spector contacts Operation Musicman and gives Gibson details of his crimes before leaving Belfast with his family to settle in Scotland. Annie Brawley wakes up from her coma.

Ten days after her phone call with the killer, Superintendent Gibson tries to help Annie Brawley regain her memories of the robbery that took her to the hospital. Rose Stagg (Valene Kane), a friend of Smith, is accidentally dragged into the case, which forces her to reveal secrets from her past to her husband Tom (Jonjo O'Neill). Meanwhile, after breaking up with Sally-Ann, Spector returns to Belfast to accomplish certain things, much to Katie's excitement and the dismay of his pregnant wife, who believes he has raped the children's babysitter.

Gibson is called before the PSNI's Policing Board, led by Morgan Monroe, to discuss the lack of progress on the case and Ferrington calls for a transfer from the investigation. Meanwhile, Spector kidnaps Rose Stagg.

Gibson orders full surveillance of the suspect and his family. Gibson and Reed Smith share an intimate moment. Spector breaks into the Investigating Officer's hotel room and experiences her confrontation with the ACC, making the game of cat and mouse far more personal than it was before.

Gibson's big surveillance operation is paying off. Detectives Martin and McNally lead a team whose job it is to install surveillance cameras and microphones in the suspect's home, but the contract has unexpected consequences. The body of a young woman who fits Rose Stagg's description is found, prompting Gibson to seize the opportunity to use the young and eager Detective Tom Anderson to lure the serial killer.

Meanwhile, Spector returns home to find his house ravaged by the botched police operation, Katie continues to give the strangler a false alibi, and Paul continues to prepare her to help him with his murders.

Meanwhile, Katie works to destroy evidence, while Hagstrom leads a team whose job it is to stop her and arrest her. Martin and McNally arrest Sally Ann for obstruction of justice, and Anderson arrests Spector for the abduction of Rose Stagg and other crimes.

Gibson is informed that a video exists showing Rose pleading for her life and the suspect's face as she monitors the progress of the interrogations behind the scenes. The search team finds Spector's burned car with conflicting evidence in it.

Several people try to interrogate Spector, who, however, refuses to be questioned and only wants to speak to Stella. Sally Ann miscarries while being questioned as she learns about the crimes Paul was arrested for. Gibson gets Spector to confess to all the crimes he has committed, but fails to get him to tell her if he killed Rose or where he hid her or her body. Spector agrees to lead Gibson to a place in the woods and in return is allowed to see his daughter. In the forest, Gibson discovers a car, in the trunk of which she finds Rose, who is barely alive. James Tyler followed the police parade and shot Paul Spector and Tom Anderson before being shot himself.

In March 2015, BBC Two ordered a six-part third season of the series. It aired from September 29, 2016 to October 28, 2016.

After the events in the forest, Rose and Spector are taken to the hospital. The doctors have to fight for Spector's life. The nurse Kiera is responsible for taking care of Spector. Gibson's shock turns into numbness at the prospect that Spector will not survive and that the victims' families will not get the justice they deserve. Katie is in despair when news of the shooting and Spector's condition reaches her. Olivia, Spector's daughter, finds an article online that talks about Spector as the "Strangler of Belfast".

Gibson and Burns are under investigation based on the way Spector's case was handled. Rose demands to be allowed to leave the hospital after discovering that Spector is only a few beds away from her. Katie attacks her former friend for talking to the press about Spector and pours acid on her face. Gibson and the other officers investigate a hiding place Spector used and discover disturbing pictures and notebooks that suggest further murders. Sally Ann brings one of Belfast's finest criminal defense lawyers, Sean Healy, to defend Spector's case. Spector regains consciousness, but after talking to his wife and daughter it becomes clear that he is suffering from memory loss and cannot remember anything after 2006.

Spector talks to a psychiatrist and his lawyers and maintains his testimony that he still has no memory of any of his alleged crimes. Spector and his nurse Kiera get closer. Evidence from hiding shows the murder of a young, brunette woman over a decade ago in London for which David Alvarez, a friend of Spector, is in jail. The attorney general wants to continue bringing charges against Sally Ann for helping Spector. Gibson questions Rose about the events surrounding her abduction. Desperate, Sally Ann gives her children warm milk mixed with sleeping pills and drives the sleeping children to the beach in the car.

Sally Ann's car, which has already been flooded by the ebb tide, is discovered. Sally Ann and the children are rescued and taken to the hospital. An interesting intimacy develops between Spector and the nurse Kiera. Spector is being transferred to a secure mental health facility to determine if he is mentally stable enough to attend the trial. Spector's legal counseling team tries to discredit Spector's confession to Gibson. Gibson tells Dr. Larson of Spector's Sexual Perversions. In another interview with Rose, Gibson admits that a police mistake led to her kidnapping.

Anderson and Ferrington go to London to speak to Alvarez about the 2002 murder of the brunette woman. Alvarez tells of the terrible sexual abuse by the staff that the boys were exposed to in a boys' home where both Spector and Alvarez had lived. He also notices that Spector protected him from the worst abuse. Spector did his evaluation with Dr. Larson. Katie is taken to a juvenile detention center as punishment for her attack. Later, during an interview with Spector and his lawyers, Gibson and Anderson press for information about Alvarez and the young brunette woman. They announce that Spector will be charged with murder because they believe that Alvarez is innocent and that Spector is covering. Spector notes that this is a smart move by the police because he can still remember the length of time involved.

The police investigation is ongoing. Spector describes Susan Harper's death as a sex game gone wrong. Unimpressed, Gibson teases Spector that he should grow up and stop the theater, which seems to hit a nerve. During the questioning, Spector attacks Stella unexpectedly and violently, which clearly injures her. Burns has a nervous breakdown after witnessing Spector's outburst. Wallace leaves Spector's legal team. Dr. Larson eventually informs Spector back at the Foyle Clinic that he is treatable, but likely not entirely curable. Gibson visits Katie in the detention center where she injured herself. Gibson urges Katie not to ruin her life in order to impress Spector. Meanwhile, Spector convinces another patient, Mark Bailey, to give him a distraction in the lounge. In the chaos that followed, Spector beats up Dr. Larson and takes his belt. He uses it to strangle Bailey to death before hanging himself on the back of the bathroom door, in the same way his mother used to kill herself. After Spector's death, Operation Music Man is disbanded, Burns resigns and Stella returns to London.
