The Fixx is a British new wave band.

The band had their greatest successes in the eighties. Especially in the USA she was at times more famous than in her own country. The best-known tracks include One Thing Leads to Another, a number 4 hit in the US, Red Skies, Less Cities More Moving People and Built for the Future . The essential Stratocaster guitar riffs by Jamie West-Oram, a precise and economical rhythm section as well as the colorful background with unusual synthesizer sounds are characteristic for the sound of The Fixx. In the sometimes demanding texts by Cy Curnin, social and political awareness is expressed. Although some of their albums were produced by the then very successful producer Rupert Hine , the band did not make a breakthrough in the commercial league.

history

Singer Cy Curnin and drummer Adam Woods founded the band in 1979 in London under the name "The Portraits". In the same year keyboardist Rupert Greenall, guitarist Tony McGrail and bassist Russell Mckenzie joined the group. At the end of 1980 the name "The Fix" was adopted. To avoid associations with drugs, it became "The Fixx" a year later. Also in 1980, Jamie West-Oram replaced Tony McGrail as guitarist, while the position of bassist was repeatedly filled. In the most successful phase in the first half of 1989 and since 2008, Dan K. Brown occupies this position. In between, session musicians were used as bassists who were not officially part of the group.

The first album "Shuttered Room" (1982) produced a Billboard Hot 100 hit through "Stand or Fall" . With "Saved By Zero" from the follow-up album "Reach The Beach" (1983) the band reached the top 20 in America for the first time. "One Thing Leads To Another" is the only top 10 hit in the US to date. With "Sign Of Fire" "Reach The Beach" contained a third US Top 40 hit. With "Are We Ourselves" from the album "Phantoms" (1984) the group again reached the top 20 in the USA. The album includes another US hit with "Sunshine in the Shade". Two years later the group made it into the US top 20 for the last time with "Secret Separation" from the album "Walkabout" (1986). The British were later in 1989 with "Driven Out" from the album "Calm Animals" and in 1991 with "How Much Is Enough?" from the album "Ink" (1991) again in the Hot 100, but could not quite build on the success of the first half of the 1980s.

The Fixx were just as successful in their neighboring country Canada as in the United States . There "One Thing Leads To Another" even took first place. The British were only moderately successful in their own homeland: Two singles made it between 50 and 60, and two more between 80 and 90. It was similar in Australia .

Although the pieces by The Fixx were and still can be heard on German radio, not a single single made it into the German single charts. At least the album "Phantoms" was listed at position 59 in 1984 for a week.
