The New Cambridge Shakespeare

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The New Cambridge Shakespeare is the title of a complete edition of the works of William Shakespeare published by Cambridge University Press .

History of the edition

Work on the new edition began under the direction of Philip Brockbank in 1984 and was completed in 2012 by his successor Brian Gibbons . It replaces the old New Shakespeare edition published by Arthur Quiller-Couch and John Dover Wilson between 1921 and 1966. While the predecessor was written exclusively by British authors, authors from the USA could also be won over for the new edition. The layout differs from that of the competing companies in that it is larger in size, artistic illustrations by C. Walter Hodges are intended to give impressions of the original performance situation, and the commentary focuses on the performance history. Text analysis issues are always dealt with in an appendix.

The edition by Edward III as part of a Shakespeare edition and the very controversial edition of Pericles, Prince of Tire , in which the authors reject the assumption of collaborative authorship (here with George Wilkins ) shared by many scholars, should be emphasized .

A special feature of the NCS edition is the "Early Quartos" series. These are print editions that are usually neglected in the editions. The series includes scientifically annotated editions of the early prints of Hamlet , Henry V , King Lear , the Richard III. , Othello , Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of a Shrew of a variant of the drama The Taming of the Shrew .
