The Obelisk is a striking and 750 m high rock needle in the south of the West Antarctic Alexander I Island . In the middle of the Staccato Peaks , it rises 29 km west-northwest of Mimas Peak . Starting from here, the Polarstar Ridge extends in a south-westerly direction .
The US polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth took the first aerial photographs on November 23, 1935, which the US cartographer WLG Joerg used for rough mapping. The British geographer Derek Searle carried out a new mapping in 1960 based on aerial photographs taken by the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948). The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the rock needle in 1961 after its resemblance to an obelisk .
