The Piltdown Men were an American instrumental rock band from Los Angeles , which released several successful singles on Capitol Records in the early 1960s .

history

The band was founded by Lincoln Mayorga and Ed Cobb , who knew each other from the band The Four Preps . Cobb was one of the singers there, Mayorga was involved as a pianist in some of the band's productions. Cobb and Mayorga wrote the pieces for the band, which only made studio recordings. The name of the band is reminiscent of the Piltdown man .

The band's first recordings were made in 1960. In addition to Mayorga as pianist and Cobb as producer, Jackie Kelso as saxophonist and Tommy Tedesco as bassist were also involved. A member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra played timpani . In addition, were guitars , drums and a second saxophone used. The band had a total of seven members.

The first single released included McDonald's Cave , which is based on the nursery rhyme Old MacDonald Had a Farm , and Brontosaurus Stomp . These were released as the first single. In the US, where Brontosaurus Stomp was the A-side, the single placed at # 75 on the charts. In the UK , McDonald's Cave was the A-side. A place 14 was achieved there. The following singles Piltdown Rides Again and Goodnight Mrs. Flintstone were not very successful in America, but placed again in the British charts. The other publications did not reach any chart positions.

The band's last single, Night Surfin , was recorded by Nick Venet in 1962 with new musicians. Among them was Dave Burgess, the guitarist of the Champs . However, the single could not record any notable successes. Afterwards, the band finally broke up.

In 1981 a compilation of the Piltdown Men’s pieces was released on record. A CD was released in 1998.
