history

Sight from Signal Hill

The building was built on the site of an 18th century fort. This Fort Townsend, a star-shaped fortress to protect British fisheries, had been abandoned by Great Britain in 1870; then it was the seat of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary , later the fire department . The fortress was built over by The Rooms, with careful documentation beforehand. Still, the structure was controversial as it competes with and breaks through the historic skyline and contributed to the destruction of artifacts.

It opened on June 29, 2005. The art gallery, which at that time was still called the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador and was located in the Arts and Culture Center , moved into the new building. Since then , numerous exhibitions have taken place in the art gallery, which covers the spectrum between Renaissance and modern art. Artists from the Newfoundland and Labrador provinces form a certain focus.

The Provincial Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador, on the other hand, focuses on the natural history and history of the province, as well as the Beothuk and Inuit indigenous peoples . This facility was previously located in a neo-classical building at 285 Duckworth Street in the city center.
