The Ten (Performance Group)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ten is an independent artist group founded in New York in the fall of 1935 by Mark Rothko , Ben-Zion , Adolph Gottlieb , Louis Harris , Yankel Kufeld , Louis Schanker , Joseph Solman , Ilya Bolotowski and Nahum Tschacbasov . Since there are only nine artists, the group soon became known as "The Ten Who are Nine" . The artists of the group belong to the style of Abstract Expressionism and have exhibited in joint exhibitions. Between December 1935 and November 1939, the group organized a total of 7 exhibitions in various galleries, as well as an exhibition and auction for the benefit of Spanish children, victims of the civil war in Spain ( Spanish children for the American League Against War and Fascism ). In November 1939, the group disbanded, presumably for political reasons.
