The Theosophist is a monthly theosophical journal.

The magazine first appeared in October 1879 and continues to be published to this day. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky founded the paper in Mumbai in order to make the theosophical idea known to a wider public. After the headquarters of the Theosophical Society was relocated from Mumbai to Adyar in 1882, the paper also took part in this move and has since appeared at this location. After the first major split in the Theosophical Society in 1895 as a result of the Judge Case into the Theosophical Society Adyar (Adyar-TG) on the one hand and the Theosophical Society in America (today Theosophical Society Pasadena) on the other hand, the journal represented and is the mouthpiece of the Adyar-TG today the official publication of this society.

Blavatsky acted as editor from 1879 until her departure from India in 1885, when Henry Steel Olcott , in his capacity as President of the Theosophical Society, took over the publication. Later the respective president of the Adyar-TG acted as editor, currently this is Radha Burnier . From the beginning, the magazine, which appears in English, was delivered to several European and American countries and is now being sent worldwide. The Theosophist does not contain any advertisements or advertising , the financing is partly through the purchase price, but primarily through the Adyar-TG, which in turn is financed from donations. The distribution takes place exclusively through the Adyar-TG own publishing house Theosophical Publishing House, by means of a subscription . Sales through kiosks or tobacconists are not planned.

In addition to theosophical topics, essays and articles on philosophy , art , literature , occultism and spiritualism are dealt with from the perspective of theosophy . The authors are usually well-known theosophists or people close to theosophy.
