The Transfer Agreement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Transfer Agreement: The Dramatic Story of the Pact Between the Third Reich and Jewish Palestine is a historical study by Edwin Black , published in 1984 , which describes the transfer agreement ( Ha'avara Agreement in Hebrew ) between Zionist organizations and the German Reich , through which Jews and their property were "transferred" to Palestine . The agreement was partly caused by the worldwide boycott of German goods, which harmed the interests of the German Reich. Despite its retrospectively controversial nature, it was one of the few actions to save Jews and their property during the Holocaust.

Main thesis

The book documents the agreement from 1933 between Nazi Germany and an organization of the Zionist Association for Germany to save Jews and Jewish assets and to promote the voluntary emigration of German Jews to Palestine.

The author presents the various currents within Judaism and emphasizes that the Zionists put their concerns about emigration to Palestine above the protection of the Jews through more stringent economic measures.

Around 60,000 German Jews were saved in this way. The worldwide boycott of German goods was an incentive for the German side. At the time, 175,000 Jews lived in Palestine (about 17% of all Palestinians), but from 1933 to 1936, 60,000 German Jews immigrated and brought some of their property with them.

reception

Richard S. Levy of Commentary did not deny the facts, but Black threw lack of historical relevance, "the historical records has added Black Verschwörungsgetue, underlying assumptions and sensationalism, but nothing new, and many false and morally shabby."
