The Ugly Duckling is a 1939 American animated short film directed by Jack Cutting .

action

The duck and drake are impatient as their children are about to hatch. A short time later the time has come: The two become proud parents of four yellow ducklings. However, an egg does not jump until a short time later. The result is a little white chick that makes completely different sounds. The duck and drake quarrel over the stranger and separate. While mother duck makes her first attempts to swim with her chicks, the "ugly duckling", who is a swan, is excluded and sees that it looks different even in its water reflection. It goes away sadly.

The little swan tries to make friends with a family of birds, but is chased away. On a lake he discovers a swimming bird that keeps still and lets him pamper it - but it's just a toy duck.

Weeping and softly trumpeting, he finally settles on the edge of the lake. A swan family hears him mourn and comes swimming. In disbelief, the little swan sees the four other young animals that are like him and is immediately taken into the family by the swan mother. He now confidently turns his back on his former duck family.

production

The Ugly Duckling was released on April 7, 1939 as the last part of the Disney animated film series Silly Symphonies . The film is loosely based on the fairy tale The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Andersen .
