The Watch is an Italian progressive rock group.

history

Singer and composer Simone Rossetti (born April 30, 1971 in Milan ) laid the foundation stone for The Watch in the mid-1990s when he founded the group The Nightwatch . After the album Twilight (1998), which was well received by critics and audiences, and a tour through Europe, the musicians parted ways due to musical differences. Rossetti then contacted Marco Schembri (born October 29, 1965 in Milan), Roberto Leoni (born January 24, 1971 in Milan), Valerio Vado (only on Ghost ), and Gabriele Manzini, some of whom he had already worked on from earlier musical projects knew from They founded The Watch in January 2001 and released the album Ghost in the same year with this line-up.

For the second album Vacuum , released in 2004 , the guitarist Vado was replaced by Ettore Salati (born April 29, 1974 in Milan), who had accompanied the band since 2001 during their live performances.

The third album Primitive was released on April 23, 2007 , followed by Planet Earth? on February 20, 2010. The fifth album Timeless was released on February 21, 2011.

style

Stylistically, the musical work of The Watch resembles the music of Genesis during the Peter Gabriel phase (1970–1974). The Watch can therefore be assigned to the genre of retro prog . You write independent pieces, which nonetheless often refer to songs from Genesis. A special trademark of the group is Rossetti's voice, which is very similar to that of Peter Gabriel. The Watch also perform live mainly as a Genesis tribute band in Europe.

The band's music divides the critics into two camps. On the one hand, the albums are praised by parts of the critics as "the best Genesis LPs that do not come from Genesis". Others, however, criticize the band's lack of stylistic originality. Due to the less Steve Hackett- oriented guitar playing of the guitarist Salati, who was won for the second album, and the use of digital keyboards, the sound of the group gained modernity and independence.
