The Western Mail

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Western Mail or Western Mail was the name of two Australian weekly newspapers published in Perth , Western Australia .

Western Australia Newspapers

The first Western Mail was jointly published between December 19, 1885 and October 23, 1896 by Charles Harper and John Winthrop Hackett Senior, owners of The West Australian , the largest daily newspaper in Western Australia . It was printed by James Gibbney for Newspaper Publishing in St Georges Terrace, a suburb of Perth .

In the late 1940s and early 1950s newspapers in western Australia kept trying new formats, including the Weekend Mail , which appeared for five years.

In 1955 the newspaper was renamed The Countryman , which, together with Farm Weekly, forms the state's two major rural newspapers.

Western Mail Limited

In 1980, Western Mail Limited took over the name after Robert Holmes à Court and the Bell Group failed to take over Britain's The Times . The newspaper existed under this name until 1988.
