Theagenes (also Theagenes of Megara ; Greek Θεαγένης ο Μεγαρεύς Theagenes ho Megareus ) was a politician and tyrant in ancient Greece .

Around 600 BC He placed himself at the head of the rural population of the Greek polis of Megara and overthrew the oligarchy of the urban nobility. In their place he established a tyranny like the ones that arose in numerous other city-states of the time. He secured his rule with the help of his bodyguard.

Little is known about his life. Some references can be found in Thucydides and later in the politics of Aristotle and in the Moralia Plutarchs .
