Karol Irzykowski (born January 23, 1873 in Błaszkowa near Jasło ; † November 2, 1944 in Żyrardów ) was a Polish writer, literary critic and film theorist.

Life

Irzykowski came from an impoverished noble family. From 1889 to 1893 he studied German in Lemberg . In the years 1894–1895 he worked temporarily as a teacher, but pronunciation errors prevented him from further didactic work. From 1895 he lived in Lviv and worked as a parliamentary and court stenographer. In 1908 he moved to Cracow , where he worked as a stenographer and correspondent in the official correspondence office. After the First World War he moved to Warsaw , where he headed the Sejm's stenographic office .

Irzykowski was an employee of the Skamander , the Wiadomości Literackie and in the years 1921-1933 Robotnik , the organ of the Polish Socialist Party . He raised his voice in many discussions about literature. He ran a theater section on Polish Radio and Rocznik Literacki , and was also a member of the Polish Academy of Literature. During the time of the German occupation he gave shorthand lessons for a living and took part in cultural life in the underground. He died in Żyrardów after the liberation.
