detail

The theater in Trnava (German Tyrnau ), a Slovak city northeast of the capital Bratislava , opened in 1831. The theater at Trojičné nám. 2 is a protected cultural monument .

The theater was built as one of the first public theater buildings in Slovakia. It was created after the U čierneho orla ( At the Black Eagle ) restaurant , which was owned by the town, was rebuilt. The architect B. Grünn designed the building in Empire style.

The restaurant continued to exist and the theater hall with 548 seats was built in a courtyard section where the former dance hall was located. The theater association supported the city with the financing. The first performance took place on December 26, 1831 and was played in German. The first Slovak performance was played in 1869. From 1893 until the end of the monarchy , the performances were only played in Hungarian as a result of the forced Magyarization .

During the renovation with Art Nouveau forms in 1907, the simple Empire facade was given a rich stucco decoration, and a representative hall of mirrors was created on the upper floor. The restaurant on the ground floor was closed and converted into an entrance hall. The windows on the ground floor date from 1960.

On the 170th anniversary in 2001, the theater was renamed the Ján Palárik Theater in honor of the Slovak playwright who worked here .
