Thebes (Thessaly)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Thessalian or Phthiotic Thebes ( ancient Greek Θῆβαι Φθιώτιδες Thēbai Phthiōtides ) was the central city on the Pagasean Gulf in Thessaly. It was inhabited in ancient times by the so-called Achaioi phthiotioi . Today it is a ruin north of the village of Mikrothives ('Little Thebes') and has not yet been identified with certainty, but may be identical to Phylake .

Since Boeotian Thebes is said to have been settled by Thessalian Achaeans through immigration, it is likely that there was a connection here. The city only gained importance after the Persian Wars . 217 BC Thebes in Thessaly was conquered by Philip V and was temporarily called Philippopolis.
