City hill with walls from the north

Theisoa (old Gr. Θεισόα) was an ancient polis in the Greek countryside of Arcadia . It was northwest of Megalopolis in the Peloponnese . The remains are to the northwest above today's mountain village Theisoa, which is on the road from Megalopolis to Andritsena in the municipality of Andritsena.

Due to its location on a steep hilltop, the city dominated the traffic connection from Sparta and Megalopolis to Olympia , which ran through the Alpheios valley. The assignment of the city was not certain for a long time. The written tradition also allowed identification as Lykoa. The discovery of a brick stamp with the letters ΘΙΣ revealed that it is probably Theisoa after all. According to tradition, the city was involved in the synoicism of Megalopolis. At the time of the Crusades, the Château Sainte Hélène was built, which was destroyed in 1302. Today almost only the city walls of the castle and the ancient city can be seen. Excavations between 1984 and 1988 provided more precise results on the walls and a house complex near the Acropolis.
