Evangelist John

The Theodor Gospel is an illuminated manuscript in Church Slavonic from the 14th century. It probably originated in Yaroslavl or its surroundings ( Tver ?).

The manuscript consists of 224 parchment sheets in the format 34.7–35 cm x 27–28 cm in 27 layers. It contains the text of the four gospels of the New Testament and a menologion . There are miniatures of the four evangelists before the respective chapters. On the carpet sheet (cover sheet) is a picture of St. Theodor Stratilates. Some initials are provided with zoomorphic motifs.

The manuscript was in the Yaroslavl Cathedral in 1802. It is named after the Theodor Monastery in Yaroslavl (was only founded in the 15th century), the Theodor Monastery in Tver (with its own painting school in the 14th century) or Prince Fyodor of Rostov (1280-1310). The manuscript is now in the State Historical Architecture and Art Museum in Yaroslavl and has inventory number 15718 there. Between 2001 and 2007, the manuscript was restored.
