В
The We ( В and в ) is the third letter of the Cyrillic alphabet . It looks exactly like a capitalized Latin B , but is pronounced differently, namely like the German w (in phonetic spelling: / v /).
Both this letter and the Be ( Б and б ) are derived from the Greek letter Beta , which has been proven to have been pronounced / v / when the Cyrillic alphabet was created. Its old name was Vedi , it had a numerical value of two .
In Russian and Bulgarian the We / v / is pronounced similar to the German W, except at the end of the word, where it stands for [ f ] ( final hardening ), and before a palatalizing vowel , where it is its phonetic value / vʲ /.
In Ukrainian , the We can also take the sound value of a consonant u (similar to the English pronunciation of the w ) in the final syllable , for example in the Ukrainian name of the city of Lemberg : Львів (/ lʲviw /).
In the fonts common in the Balkans , the small We is often not written like a reduced large We, but just as large and therefore more rounded. In this form it is reminiscent of a German ß or the number 8 .
