The A (Cyrillic А and а ) is the first letter of the Cyrillic alphabet . Both lowercase and uppercase letters are identical in their shapes to those of the A in the Latin alphabet .

It is derived directly from Alpha . In the early Cyrillic alphabet, it was called Az and had a numerical value of one .

In many languages ​​written with Cyrillic letters (for example, Russian , Serbian , Macedonian, or Bulgarian ), it is pronounced as / a /. However, it can also stand for / ɑ / and / ə /, as in Ingush or Chechen .
