Іі

І (lower case і, IPA pronunciation i ) is a letter of the Cyrillic alphabet and is used in the Ukrainian, Belarusian, and Kazakh alphabets. It has a numerical value of 10.

In older Russian and in Cyrillic alphabets derived from it, such as B. the Kildinsamischen of 1878, there was both the И , which is derived from the Greek Eta , and the І, which is derived from the Greek Iota . Although both letters were pronounced almost the same way back then, both were retained because they corresponded to different numerical values in the Cyrillic number system.

When the Russian spelling was reformed in 1918 , it was decided to remove the superfluous І from the alphabet and only use the И. In the reform of the Belarusian spelling, however, the И was removed from the alphabet and the І was retained. Both letters are pronounced differently in Ukrainian, so both letters can be found in the Ukrainian alphabet.

A distinction must be made between the palochka , which looks exactly like the capital letter I and is used in various Caucasian languages with the Cyrillic alphabet.
