Ч
Чч
The Ч ( lowercase letter ч ) is a letter in the Cyrillic alphabet . The pronunciation is / t͡ʃ / or palatalized (in Russian only) / t͡ɕ /.
The Ч is derived from the Glagolitic letter Cherv ( ), this letter in turn is based on the Hebrew letter Tzade . In the system of Glagolitic numbers it had a value of 1000.
In the early Cyrillic alphabet, the letter still resembled a Latin Ypsilon, but moved to its current form early on. From the Cyrillic Koppa it took over the numerical value of 90 in the Cyrillic number system .
In the old orthography of the Zhuang , the letter was used for the 4th tone because it looks similar to the number 4. It was replaced by the X in the 1986 reform.
