The Щ ( lowercase letter щ ) is a letter in the Cyrillic alphabet . The debate is different depending on the language, for example in Russian [⁠ ɕ (ː) ⁠] , the Bulgarian [⁠ ʃt ⁠] .

Today the Russian Щ is classified as a voiceless alveolopalatal fricative , the length of the finale varies.

Transliteration

This letter is the most difficult letter of the Cyrillic alphabet to romanize, usually it is rendered like a combination of Ш and Ч, in the German transcription so shtsch , in English shch . The Bulgarian Щ is transcribed according to the pronunciation sht and in English sht . The corresponding scientific transliterations are usually šč for Russian and št for Bulgarian or according to ISO 9 ŝ (regardless of the source language).
