Robert Owen "Rob" Edwards (born December 25, 1982 in Madeley ) is a former Welsh football player . The defender , trained at Aston Villa , made over 100 competitive appearances for Wolverhampton Wanderers at the beginning of his career and most recently with Barnsley FC until summer 2013 .

Athletic career

Edwards went through the youth department of Aston Villa and made his debut on December 28, 2002 for the first division side in a 1-0 home win against Middlesbrough FC . After a total of three games in a row, which Edwards initially played as a right full-back - later he found his regular position more in central defense - he signed a contract for 2½ years with the "Villans". From then on, however, he was denied the ultimate breakthrough. The nine competitive games in the 2002/03 season were also his last games for Aston Villa. In the course of the 2003/04 season he was first loaned to the second division club Crystal Palace in November 2003 for a month . There he managed a goal in six games in a 1-1 draw against Coventry City and shortly after the turn of the year he also went on loan to second division rivals Derby County . There he played the round to the end and also came there in the 2-1 win against FC Gillingham on January 17, 2004 to one of his rare goals. Back at his "home club" there coach David O'Leary informed him that he could leave the club.

For 150,000 pounds Edwards moved in July 2004 to the Wolverhampton Wanderers , who had just been relegated to the Football League Championship , and signed a three-year contract here. After appearances in the first four games of the season, he suffered a severe ankle injury that put him out of action for half a year. He came to significantly more playing times in the 2005/06 season, especially since the newcomer and center-back competitor Jackie McNamara injured himself early. Also in the season 2006/07 he completed the majority of the games under the new coach Mick McCarthy until in April 2007 a knee injury ensured that Edwards could not participate in the decisive play-off games. Shortly after his comeback, on September 5, 2007, he suffered another knee damage in a game with the reserve team, and despite his contract that ran until 2009, the Wolves put him on the transfer list in May 2008.

On August 6, 2008 Edwards hired at the second division competitor FC Blackpool . The amount of the transfer fee was kept secret and the contract term was two years - plus the option for an additional season. Just a week after his debut on August 9, 2008 against Bristol City (0-1), Edwards, who immediately became a key player, was given the captain's armband instead of the suspended Keith Southern and kept it until the end of the season.

Welsh national team

Although Edwards had already played for England's junior elections in his youth, he decided to compete for the Welsh senior team in the future - both parents are Welsh. On March 29, 2003 he made his debut for the "Dragons" on the occasion of a European Championship qualifier against Azerbaijan , which ended with a 4-0 victory.
