Є

Єє

The Є ( lower case є ) is the ninth letter of the Ukrainian alphabet and represents the phoneme sequence [ je ] there.

The letter was originally created as a variant of Е and served, among other things, as the basis for the ligature Ѥ . The pronunciation of the letters soon diverged, especially in Ukrainian, and Є was recognized as a separate letter in the Ukrainian alphabet.

The letter is also used to replace Ө if it is not available.
