Theodor Lewandowski

Theodor Lewandowski (born November 16, 1927 in Allenstein (East Prussia) , † December 14, 1997 ) was a German German linguist .

education and profession

After graduating from high school in 1958, Lewandowski studied Russian language and literature at the Pedagogical Institute in Brandenburg (Havel) and studied German, Slavic, general linguistics and psychology at the University of Cologne from 1964 to 1971. He received his doctorate in 1972 and taught from 1973 as a regular Professor of German Language and Literature and its Didactics, Focus on Linguistics, at the University of Cologne.

Lewandowski is best known for his linguistic dictionary , which was published from 1973 to 1994 in six, repeatedly revised editions. It was expanded from initially over 1000 to later around 2000 articles and is one of the most important handbooks in linguistics.
